You have the Chinese communists to thank for that. Well... them and their allies in your government. Between them they shipped all the good jobs to China. Same happened all over the developed countries in the European Union as well. Still, I don't think the US can maintain its status as the world's largest economy and most advanced and abundant consumer market without the dollar's hegemony.

Much to the disapproval of the public, our government did participate in the Afghanistan and Iraq war shortly after Bush gave out his ultimatum of "you're either with us or you're with the terrorists" to the world.

There is no legitimate elite here. All of the wealthiest people are linked with organized crime and all of the lesser business and political figures have to abide by the rules of the mafia. Organized crime and corruption permeate all aspects of the society. You can give bribes to government officials to solve any personal problem you might have. You can buy an illegal gun easily. You can even sell Toyota pickup trucks to ISIS if you want and you won't get into trouble. (For some reason they only buy Toyota)
