I think they're so fat simply because they eat way too much thrash food. There's a big amount of people that won't homecook, instead, they'll eat fast food on a daily basis.
Also, American culture is based on always consuming more than they really need (not "consuming" as "eating", but as "shopping" or "buying"). This causes a rough estimate of third of the food that the average American family buys ending up in dumpsters.
