They won't outright say it, but I'm sure that their delegates will of course subtly leave the university officials with the distinct impression that it might happen that sponsorship is reduced if too many climate change studies which are damaging to them might pop up. Same with everything really, big pharmaceutical sponsoring independent universities? They'll do whatever they can to limit the exposure of research that shows harmful side effects or ineffectiveness of their drugs.

Un año después del golpe militar encabezado por el general Pinochet el 11 de septiembre de 1973, este ordenó asesinar a su examigo y antecesor en el comando del ejército, el general Carlos Prats. El crimen lo cometió en Buenos Aires la dirección inteligencia chilena (DINA) el 30 de septiembre de 1974, donde se había exiliado Prats, un militar antigolpista. Una bomba, colocada debajo de su carro, lo mató a él y a su esposa, Sofía Cuthbert.

Los detalles de la conspiración del gobierno norteamericano quedaron de nuevo en evidencia con la publicación de una serie de documentos que revelan la trama para derrocar el gobierno chileno encabezado por Salvador Allende.

Seis días después de la toma de posesión de Allende, Kissinger entregó a los jefes de la CIA, del Departamento de Defensa y de la Secretaría de Estado un memorando ultra secreto titulado “Política hacia Chile”. Ahí resumía las orientaciones emanadas de una reunión del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional (NSC) con Nixon sobre el tema. El documento resumía la posición adoptada por el presidente, a sugerencia de propio Kissinger:

(1) La posición pública de los Estados Unidos será correcta pero fría, para evitar dar al gobierno de Allende una base que le permita lograr apoyo nacional e internacional para consolidar el régimen; pero…

(2) Los Estados Unidos tratarán de maximizar las presiones sobre el gobierno de Allende para evitar su consolidación y limitar sus capacidades de promover políticas contrarias a los intereses de los Estados Unidos y del hemisferio.

“Decididamente me parece que esta política es importante considerando sus efectos sobre otras personas en el mundo”, dijo Nixon, haciendo eco de los argumentos que Kissinger le había presentado cuatro días antes sobre los posibles efectos del “modelo Allende”.

El efecto del “modelo Allende” puede ser insidioso, puede tener efectos en otras partes, especialmente en Italia; si se reproduce podría tener en efecto significativo en el balance mundial y en nuestra posición en el mundo, dijo Kissinger. “Si Allende muestra que puede poner en práctica una política marxista antinorteamericana, otros pensarán que ellos también lo pueden hacer”. Esa era su evaluación.

La directiva autorizaba a los funcionarios norteamericanos a colaborar con otros gobiernos de la región, especialmente las dictaduras militares que gobernaban en Brasil y Argentina, para coordinar esfuerzos contra Allende; para discretamente bloquear préstamos de bancos multilaterales a Chile y poner fin a los créditos de exportación y préstamos de los Estados Unidos; para estimular las corporaciones norteamericanas a dejar Chile, y manipular los valores en el mercado internacional del principal producto de exportación chileno, el cobre, para causar el mayor daño posible a la economía chilena.

La CIA fue autorizada a preparar planes relativos a esto para su futura implementación. “Helms (el director de la CIA, Richard Helms) tiene que acabar con esa gente”, dijo Nixon a Kissinger, refiriéndose a las operaciones encubiertas que se programaban. “Lo hemos dejado bien claro”, contestó Kissinger.

Las consecuencias de ese golpe de Estado son hoy evidentes. Los efectos de la iniciativa de Washington son bien conocidos y han sido recordados cuando se cumplieron los 50 años de la elección de Allende, en septiembre pasado. Fortaleció los regímenes militares, dio origen a la “Operación Cóndor”, una coordinación entre las dictaduras del Cono Sur para el secuestro, desaparición o asesinato de opositores en toda la región y, sobre todo, abrió la avenida para un modelo neoliberal de la economía cuyos efectos están hoy en bajo crítica en todo el mundo. Efectos evidenciados, además, por la tragedia de la Covid 19.

Es más difícil saber si el eventual gobierno exitoso de Allende pudo haberse transformado en un “modelo” con influencia mundial, como temía Kissinger.

En Chile se ha abierto un proceso para la convocatoria de una constituyente, aprobado en un plebiscito el mes pasado, para sustituir la que dejó Pinochet. Sus integrantes serán elegidos en abril próximo, en medio de protestas públicas que estallaron en el país en octubre del año pasado y no han cesado.

Pero la política promovida entonces por Washington acabó teniendo un efecto también en Estados Unidos, como era inevitable. Finalmente también ahí el gobierno puso en duda la voluntad popular expresada en las urnas, haciendo que la experiencia habitual de intervenir en las elecciones en América Latina se revierta Y se instaure en su propio país.

The best part of life is sleeping and not dreaming. Just pure nothingness and rest without even knowing, no happiness or sadness, no confusion or anything. Just nothing, peace. I have lived countless years positive that I want to die because I have no interest or desire to keep going. When you are reading a book and lose interest, you stop reading. When you exercise and become too sore, you stop lifting. When you eat and are no longer hungry, you stop eating. When you are ill and begin to recover you ease off on rest and medicine. I am alive and have no aspirations, hope, happiness, or sadness even, I'm just finished with this and ready to end it, whenever the oppurtunity may arise. People have this fictional and extreme view of suicide that is a teenager being impulsive after being dumped before prom, when that is just the loud minority of suicides and suicidal people. In reality everyone is suicidal, just people want to delude themselves that after they die there will be some sort of legacy or meaning, that it was all worth it. Like relationships and sex, all the foreplay, experiences, build up, ups and downs.. just for it to end. Suicide is prostitution taken to a larger scale, skipping to the end, cutting out the fat, getting what you want over and done with, no bullshit.

Instead, we talk about how sexism is the biggest problem. Sure, sexism might be annoying, but in the west, it is hardly something that creates a genuine barrier for women.

Startups have it worst, and everday I count the number of years I have to work in the high stress places I want or do a startup if I want to have two kids before 35. No one talks about planning around fertility. When I mention it to someone that I want to take time off for a couple years to have children in silicon valley, they look at me as if I'm an alien. As if wanting to be pregnant and not working at the same time as being sleep deprived and wanting to spend time with my own baby when they are at their youngest is some strange outlandish fantasy.

All careers are built this way. PhD to tenure, startups, generally high stress professions. I wish the world wasn't so male centric, that feminists actually cared about finding structural solutions instead of forcing women to become copies of men to achieve gender parity. But they care more about power than actual equality where we acknowledge that women have different needs and desires, that those needs and desires are equally valuable and not inferior to desires men have, that the two genders have different strengths and capabilities and it is equally important to reward both. And maybe not wanting to outsource your baby to a nanny during their most vulnerable years is not a heretical thought.

I wish we had more focus in allowing people to transition back from taking a few years off to raise young kids, and it wasn't automatically assumed that you would be a worse founder or professor or software engineer just because you have 2-4 years you didn't commercially work. Hell, I want to take that time to contribute to open source, something I don't get to do much usually and I'm looking forward to it because I am willing to face the consequences. But I wish more women could be less scared of their career prospects for choosing to have children.
