Haven't mastered any other language per se. Japanese is the closest (could take the JLPT at N2 level and fail by a small margin) but still not good enough to be useful to society, especially when I don't have any practice speaking. Other than that, mostly bits and pieces of Korean, Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Thai...

you've learned some interesting shit my weaboo gringo friend
I don't even know what Tagalog is
I'll try
the problem will be getting banned for "spamming" this in other ibs
In my experience, they don't ban you unless you -or the admins- are truly annoying
I'm trying to master portuguese at the moment. I'm planning to get out from this shithole and never come back, and Brazil is one of my options.

>>7How did you go about learning Japanese? Did you study it in college/university, or are you a self-learner?
¿Minna no Nihongo? Maybe...
>>8One of the official languages of the Philippines. Also called "Filipino" to piss off Visayans. The way verbs work blows my mind.
>>12Completely self-taught. Started when I was a wee weeb and learnt through trial-and-error. There weren't nearly as many resources back then as there are now, so most of my experience involved buying old issues of Weekly Jump and running through with a dictionary to try and figure things out. Everything after that was reading stuff like Tae Kim's guide, Anki decks, a few grammar books here and there, lots of listening practice via NHK News, FM Odawara, god knows how many random Youtubers, and so on. Manga also made for decent reading practice at a lower level, but I've since moved on to light novels and online news. /blog

Don't know if mastered but I've got a really good pronunciation and understanding of english. I took a semester of french in college but it wasn't very helpful; I'd learnt that stuff in the two years that my school teached french, so I'm waiting for the next semester to take the second part. Meanwhile I've got to 11% of french in Duolingo www

I forgot to mention Lang-8 as a good resource for practicing your (written) output. Basically, you write whatever bullshit you want in your target language and natives correct your mistakes. It's got kind of a tacky, gamified interface, and it's mostly good for English and Japanese, but there still seems to be demand for most of the common languages of the world there.

Welcome to learning languages, friend. It's basically a second job, except it tends to take money out of your pocket instead of putting it in.

Today something struck me: Why am I doing this? Why am I learning Japanese?
I can't seem to remember the reason why I started doing this in the first place. I've seen a shitload of anime and read quite a bit of manga, but is that a good enough reason to learn a whole new language? After 4000 hours and years of learning it, all I'll have to show for it is being able to watch anime without subtitles and reading raw manga and light novels. Is it really worth it all just for that?
I'm in two minds right now. Should I give up? Could you answer me, what is your reason for learning Japanese, or any language you're learning?
dont learn japanese learn spanish ^—^

>>24When it comes to my own personal motivations for learning languages, it comes down to "do I like the way this language works or not?" Now, there are secondary considerations like how much of a literary tradition exists, whether or not I'm interested in the countries where it's spoken, etc. Overall, though? How "useful" it is or whatever is the least of my concern. You can always find a "use" for a language somewhere; you may just have to look harder for some.
Honestly, if you just don't have any real interest in the language itself or you're not getting anything out of it anymore, then there's nothing wrong with moving onto something else.
people who study computer science learn a ton of useless languages
That's neither here nor there, prog. langs are linguistic specializations and not on par.
>>30True lmfao.
Sincerely, a comp sci student.

From season 1 to 3 the show is funny though. It's nothing like Seinfeld or Arrested Development, but it's actually enjoyable.
TBBT is like Ctrl Alt Del turned sitcom.

That's the point, when the show premiered it was actually better. The "TBBT sucks because it just appeal to nerd culture refferences" type of opinion is actually really basic, and I don't really think that's accurate. IT Crowd used the same formula in many episodes and it became a cult sitcom. The key here is always the execution. The problem with Big Bang Theory is that it keeps using the same formula over and over again, and the show won't take risks anymore. Sure it was a risk to make a sitcom about nerd culture back in 2007, but now it's a total safe move. That's why I think that the first three season are somehow good, because they were actually trying to write a good sitcom, they had to, because the theme of the show back in the day wouldn't attract many people so the jokes and the plot had to be really good. It had to. After that it went downhill becuase of the massification of the internet and geek culture (superheroes comics, star wars, online games, etc) and the show stopped trying. We instead got a Simpsons situation, where the whole comedy was based on refferences to popular culture, and the plot or the jokes weren't that important anymore.
IT Crowd has smart humor, TBBT is basically:
*does something mundane and nerdy*
↓
*audience erupts in laugher*
