Why are textboards dead in the west? (74 respuestas)

2 : : 21/10/17(sat)14:15:04 ID:JkZGJjYW0

Because they like to create an infinite loop of circlejerks.

3 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (186.36.*.*) : 21/10/17(sat)20:49:15 ID:ZhODYzZW0

Because of 4chan. That's it.

4 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [AR] (168.181.*.*) : 22/10/17(sun)14:52:33 ID:FmZjRjND0

People don't like to read long shit anymore, so they use images, GIFs and WebMs. That's the reason 4chan has millions of users per month

5 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 22/10/17(sun)19:07:37 ID:c4ZjI5OD0

What does that has to do with it, even?
4chan is the __only__ reason textboards are not completely dead. And that's because of world4ch.

6 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [??] (* : 22/10/17(sun)21:11:56 ID:dhZDk3OT0

>4chan is the __only__ reason textboards are not completely dead
... how in the world? B.a.I has absolutely nothing to do with 4chan. BBS culture can be traced to the eastern culture. Deflate your ego.

>What does that has to do with it, even?
I think he's pointing to the fact that 4chan popularized the imageboard concept, thus conditioning the western side of the internet to its culture. Since the BBS culture was never spread here anyway people tend to consider the format of these kind of websites unpleasing.

7 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (190.98.*.*) : 23/10/17(mon)15:15:31 ID:JlMDdlYj0

Basically this. Memes and GIFs are so widespread that people doesn't even think in words anymore, they think in "graphics" (reaction faces, memes etc). It's the modern plague of society.

8 : : 24/10/17(tue)09:43:54 ID:YyZTgwND0

Or greentexting for those who can't convey messages like a normal person.

9 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [BG] (85.196.*.*) : 28/10/17(sat)03:40:49 ID:E1OTVlMj0

Greentext more like misuse of the quoted text feature

Also the Japanese are living in both 1995 and 2040 at the same time.

23 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [AR] (200.114.*.*) : 21/06/18(thu)15:39:10 ID:kwNmU4Ym0

These places were fucked since the beginning. Anonymous posting was a mistake and it eventually gave us the shittiest timeline possible. Nerd/anime/gamer culture can fuck off and die and especially its mutant brother *chan culture.

24 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (* : 21/06/18(thu)18:31:11 ID:A0Yzc2ZG0

4-ch is neglected, and there's no other site with its scope. What was supposed to take off, tablecat's lounge?

25 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (* : 21/06/18(thu)18:39:54 ID:hiNjY5YW0

world2ch was made by a Japanese teenager and it barely attracted English-speaking people, while 4chan was made with the whole anime subforum of one of the largest English forums at the time in mind. It was inevitable.

Even 4chan loses to Japan. 4chan gets an average of 800,000 posts every day, while 2ch gets an average of 2,800,000. No idea about Futaba Channel, but I know 4chan surpassed them in traffic in late 2006.

32 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (* : 25/06/18(mon)22:48:25 ID:A0Yzc2ZG0

Futaba is mostly weebshit. Which is really waht image boards should be used for.

35 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 29/06/18(fri)13:33:33 ID:djNTRiOW0

Are text boards the last bastion for board culture?

36 : : 29/06/18(fri)13:40:39 ID:MyZTBlZD0

Well, I don't know about that. I just want to discuss things without memes and chanspeak being shoved on my face, anyway.

37 : : 29/06/18(fri)18:47:21 ID:RjZWQ4ZT0

I just want to discuss things... There's nobody here!

38 : : 02/07/18(mon)01:09:54 ID:E5MDI3Nz0

I am here, you know (´・ω・`)

39 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 02/07/18(mon)12:25:55 ID:djNTRiOW0

That's a minor downside to small communities, however it's better than being bombarded by posters that are trying to get screenshots for reddit and etc.
Anyway what brought you anons here?

40 : : 02/07/18(mon)16:01:13 ID:c4MmFjNz0

I found this place by lurking English textboards and now I check it out periodically.

41 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 03/07/18(tue)20:10:14 ID:djNTRiOW0

I came here to try and recapture some of that nostalgia that pre-mobile internet had. I seriously think the internet was a better place then, sure it was wild and random but that's what made it fun you never knew what you would see.

42 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (* : 03/07/18(tue)20:13:20 ID:g2Y2FmMW0

You should've seen the mobile version of this textboard like seven years ago, it was made with i-mode and WAP in mind. Real nostalgic.

43 : : 03/07/18(tue)20:22:54 ID:UzMGU3Y20

Truth be told I'm not sure this place is too wild and random nowadays, we're all probably too old and jaded and focus more on regular discussions. I know what you mean though, and if the FAQ is anything to go by, this website tries to keep a web 1.0 sort of feel, or rather a Frankenstein monster between web 1.0 and web 2.0.

44 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 03/07/18(tue)20:23:50 ID:djNTRiOW0

>>42 sounds cool, anon do you think the current internet is pozzed? I've heard rumors of a "meganet" being developed but it's been a while since I ran in that circle.

45 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 03/07/18(tue)20:44:34 ID:djNTRiOW0

True, I think enjoy the come and go nature of what it was. Do you anons browse image boards?

46 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [CL] (* : 03/07/18(tue)21:13:06 ID:g2Y2FmMW0

Yeah, I think social media were a blight unto the Internet as a whole, centralizing everything and destroying the once rich ecosystem of wildly varied stupid and funny websites on which we might waste our time. And the worst part is that once social media sites stopped being fun and interesting (probably around 2012), the cool websites they had supplanted were never coming back. Forums were depopulated and blogs were shut down.

>Do you anons browse image boards?
Very, very rarely. Sometimes I check 4chan's /a/ board once an episode of a show I'm watching airs (not that I've been able to watch too much stuff thanks to uni) and quickly leave once the thread goes back to the usual shitfest that 4chan is.

47 : : 03/07/18(tue)23:59:52 ID:FhMzI0Nm0

Did the advent of smartphones itself cause a degradation of the average netizen or did they show up at the wrong time, so to speak, getting associated or even blamed for a second Eternal September that would have happened regardless? I personally don't know. And I only use smartphones to stay in touch with family and friends, listen to music, and browse this specific website.

48 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 04/07/18(wed)18:13:42 ID:djNTRiOW0

>>46, >>47
I think smartphones did accelerate the centralization of the internet but even without them PDAs would have taken their place they do everything a basic smartphone does minus calls and browse the internet (except for a few). I think the major contributing factor was the barrier of entry I recall back in the imac G3 came out it was aimed at causal consumers much like the iphone today. In short by removing the barrier of entry more and more people have access to the community. This will cause a dilution of the community and eventually a schism will form.

I think that everyone should just invest in themselves and shy away from regular social media because it literally is the Sodom and Gomorrah of today's society which is to say it robs people of their soul. Like seems most people can't handle banter except blue collar types.

49 : : 25/07/18(wed)17:13:11 ID:E5Y2UxNT0

Forums and usenet exist. Textboards have nothing unique to offer that isn't as retarded as "culture", furthermore imageboards are objectively superior to textboards as they allow more freedom in user interactions.

Image boards are fun but text will always be around. Forums always spring up for niche hobbies and communities.

They're not completely dead tho and are pretty active, but /dqn/ is like 2 times more active than the other side altogether

Still, they're more active than a lot of imageboards.

because of vanity, people want recognition for what they write, plus texboards don't have the visual appeal of ibs.

Why it didnt happen to 4chan, WHY???

72 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (165.227.*.*) : 25/07/20(sat)23:26:29 ID:MxMDhiMW0

remember what you described, that's "apparently" what 4chan has. out of the doubt, if 4chan was a textboard, most likely it would be unpopular.

73 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [US] (* : 17/12/21(fri)21:02:56 ID:A5MmFmZW0

Just isn't suited for Western palettes. You have to look at the way respective bigger social media platforms took on in the East versus in the West. Imageboards in the West are dead as all hell too in reality. 4chan is immortalized in internet anthropology, notoriety, mass media, and in language. 8chan took off because it was it's retarded little Reddit spin-off. Imageboards in the West were never big, never will be. 4chan is unique because it was created as a fun was for people from an already well established website to interface in a way that they thought was interesting. Textboards are only good for discussion. Sad, but Westerners just don't like discussing things. No, they like networking differently. You can just look it all up, it's in English after all. Archive culture, question forums, that shit is far bigger in the Global Language than it is in Japanese, thusly, you don't really need to talk about it as much. Not so hard to find something you want to discuss and have it already had been discussed and said discussion being documented for everybody else to take from. Imageboards are also dead in the West because you don't really have to be apart of them to enjoy their fruits. Archives, YouTube videos, Wikis, the list goes on. As for textboards, Discord and Reddit probably, I don't know. When you have these "DIY" megaforums you kill an incentive to make your own place. I think Infinity scripts might have done this for the IB Dev scene. When a retard can make their own forum or chat room for thousands to join in three clicks as opposed to a competent person せっかく developing their own, there isn't much of a point.

74 : Nameless@Passing through the lobby [v6] (2600:387:f:a1a:*.*.*.*) : 18/03/22(fri)16:46:28 ID:QyMzk3Mj0

Textboards are well-suited for Spanish-speaking countries because we are more regionalist than English-speaking ones (given it's a much more widely spoken and global language online) and freaks will post doxxes and revenge porn on local imageboards. It's just a terrible culture, BaI is a shining light in the face of that...
Anon discussion can only be tolerable in our sphere throught text-only interfaces.
