I wanna tell you another true story.

My brother and I are really close, for siblings who are six years apart. He was my idol. I was always tagging after him, wanting to do what he did, because I thought what he did was really cool. And it was! When he got into pokemon, he taught me how to play, and I fell in love with it. When he got into Yu-Gi-Oh, I did too. Then came the PS2, which was a marvelous invention that let me immerse myself in Final Fantasy and the glory that is Kingdom Hearts. @-@ We still quibbled over whose turn it was to play Pokemon Silver on the old Gameboy Color, but the PS2 hypnotized us.

Then my brother got into online multiplayer gaming, and they were violent games that my parents didn't want me playing because I was "too young". So I had to stand back and watch him play without me. I got into Toontown instead, which was fun, but I could no longer relate to his games. But sometimes, if I was lucky, he'd let me have a go.

First time I got on, I crashed a plane. I was frantically typing, "How do you fly this thing???" and the other players were screaming, "SPACEBAR! SPACEBAR!" I crashed into one of our team's tanks and blew the whole thing up. Funtimes. That's when I apologetically explained that I was using my brother's account to have a few turns, to see if it was worth me buying a copy and installing it (after disabling my father's monitoring software, obviously) and they went NUTS.

"Who are you?" "What the fuck are you doing here?" "What the hell is wrong with you?"

My explanation: "I'm (insert username here)'s little sister, I'm just giving the game a try. I haven't done this before, so give me a minute to figure this out."

If I thought they went nuts then, they went absolutely berserk at this. I was twelve, mind, and I hadn't even come close to facing this kind of behavior on the sites I frequented, such as Neopets and Toontown. Not even one-fucking-bit close. I got everything from, "Girls shouldn't be playing" to "haha suck my dick" to "I'm going to find you and rape you if you don't gtfo." I'm not kidding.

I didn't go on there and brag about being a girl who liked games. I identified who I was and apologized for the inconvenience I was causing (which lasted roughly ten minutes, and then I started kicking ass). And I got verbally ATTACKED for that.

And y'know? That's sort of been the standard expectation for almost any similar multiplayer games I've ever been on. The number of girls who are attacked and harassed and sent rape and death threats and creepy stalker come-ons and promises of sexual violence and the like-- the majority of them are attacked for no other reason than the other gamers were able to identify them as female. Not because they went on and said, "Hello boys, if you haven't noticed, I'm a girl! That's right, a gamer girl!" It's because they even went on, period.

Your comic points to the scant minority who go on looking to be worshipped because they think it's easy attention, but I just want to say that if you want a true story, look at mine. It's reflective of thousands of other girls who play games or have been driven away from playing, where your comic is reflective of a rarity rather than a commonality. =/

Usually I’m disgusted by the sound of people shitting but this was different, it was like a glorious trumpet heralding a new age of sweetness.

The C programming language's only failing is giving you access to what is really there, and telling you the cold hard raw truth. C gives you the red pill. C pulls the curtain back to show you the wizard. C is truth.

I've been programming for a very long time. So long that it's incredibly boring to me. At the time that I wrote this book, I knew about 20 programming languages and could learn new ones in about a day to a week depending on how weird they were. Eventually though this just became boring and couldn't hold my interest anymore. This doesn't mean I think programming is boring, or that you will think it's boring, only that I find it uninteresting at this point in my journey.

What I discovered after this journey of learning is that it's not the languages that matter but what you do with them. Actually, I always knew that, but I'd get distracted by the languages and forget it periodically. Now I never forget it, and neither should you.

Which programming language you learn and use doesn't matter. Do not get sucked into the religion surrounding programming languages as that will only blind you to their true purpose of being your tool for doing interesting things.

Programming as an intellectual activity is the only art form that allows you to create interactive art. You can create projects that other people can play with, and you can talk to them indirectly. No other art form is quite this interactive. Movies flow to the audience in one direction. Paintings do not move. Code goes both ways.

Programming as a profession is only moderately interesting. It can be a good job, but you could make about the same money and be happier running a fast food joint. You're much better off using code as your secret weapon in another profession.

People who can code in the world of technology companies are a dime a dozen and get no respect. People who can code in biology, medicine, government, sociology, physics, history, and mathematics are respected and can do amazing things to advance those disciplines.

Of course, all of this advice is pointless. If you liked learning to write software with this book, you should try to use it to improve your life any way you can. Go out and explore this weird wonderful new intellectual pursuit that barely anyone in the last 50 years has been able to explore. Might as well enjoy it while you can.

Finally, I'll say that learning to create software changes you and makes you different. Not better or worse, just different. You may find that people treat you harshly because you can create software, maybe using words like "nerd". Maybe you'll find that because you can dissect their logic that they hate arguing with you. You may even find that simply knowing how a computer works makes you annoying and weird to them.

To this I have just one piece of advice: they can go to hell. The world needs more weird people who know how things work and who love to figure it all out. When they treat you like this, just remember that this is your journey, not theirs. Being different is not a crime, and people who tell you it is are just jealous that you've picked up a skill they never in their wildest dreams could acquire.

You can code. They cannot. That is pretty damn cool.
